How long do lead roof valleys last?

A properly installed lead valley can last 50–60 years depending on the lead thickness, roof movement and local weather conditions.

Can a leaking valley be repaired temporarily?

Yes. Products like flashband, bitumen paint or Acrypol can provide temporary waterproofing, but these are short-term fixes. A leaking valley typically needs full replacement for a permanent solution.

What is a GRP dry valley system?

A dry valley is a modern GRP (fibreglass) alternative to lead. It’s maintenance-free, durable, faster to install, and fully mechanical without mortar. Ideal when replacing an entire roof.

Are dry valleys better than lead?

Both options are strong. Lead is traditional and long-lasting, while GRP dry valleys offer easier installation, excellent weather resistance and zero maintenance. They’re common on modern new builds.

Can you refurbish a valley instead of replacing it?

Yes. Some valleys can be refurbished through repointing, clearing debris, applying waterproof putty and restoring damaged sections. This is only suitable if the underlying structure is still sound.

Do I need to replace the whole roof if the valley is leaking?

No. In most cases, only the valley needs repairing or replacing. However, if the roof is very old or multiple areas are failing, a full replacement may be recommended.

How long does valley replacement take?
